Property Evidence
Introduction
Police departments maintain Property and Evidence Units responsible for managing all property and evidence collected during investigations and arrests. These units ensure the integrity and proper handling of items, maintaining a strict chain of custody from collection to release or disposal.
Found property
Procedures vary, but generally, found property is held for a period (e.g., 90 days) before being offered to the finder, or disposed of if unclaimed.
Evidence in criminal cases
Items seized as evidence are generally held until the case is resolved, including appeals, and may require court orders for release.
Firearms
Specific regulations govern the handling and return of firearms, often requiring background checks and approvals from law enforcement agencies.
Property held for safekeeping
Items may be held for a period (e.g., 60 days) and returned to the owner upon request, or disposed of if unclaimed.
