The San Carlos Apache Tribe has adopted a new Special Events Ordinance and Special Event Permit Regulations to help improve public safety at large gatherings held on the Reservation.

This action follows several serious incidents that occurred during large residential gatherings in recent months, including two graduation celebrations where shootings endangered attendees and nearby residents. One of these tragic incidents claimed the life of a young Tribal member and graduating high school student, a heartbreaking loss that continues to impact her family, friends, and the entire community.

The new permit process is designed to promote safety through advance planning, coordination with public safety agencies, and increased accountability for event organizers. By requiring permits for qualifying events, Tribal officials and the San Carlos Apache Police Department can work with hosts before an event to identify potential safety concerns, develop appropriate security measures, and better protect attendees.

The permit requirements apply to large residential gatherings as well as community events hosted by the San Carlos Apache Tribe, Tribal enterprises, departments, programs, businesses, and outside organizations conducting events on the Reservation.

The goal of these regulations is not to discourage community celebrations, but to ensure they are conducted in a safe and responsible manner while helping prevent future tragedies.
