Apache Language Preservation

The Apache Language Preservation program of the San Carlos Apache Tribe is dedicated to documenting, archiving, and revitalizing the sacred Western Apache language for future generations. Operating under the direction of the Tribal Council and funded through federal and cultural grants—including support from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA)—our dedicated team works alongside tribal elders, cultural leaders, and educators to ensure our native tongue remains vibrant and actively spoken across the reservation.
Our Mission in Apache Language Preservation
Our highest priority is to safeguard our ancestral language and make educational materials accessible to every tribal member. In Apache culture, language and identity are inseparable—preserving our speech is essential to preserving our heritage and sovereignty as Apache people. Through comprehensive elder interviews, audio-video recordings, and field research with youth, we archive traditional ecological knowledge, plant and animal taxonomy, sacred place names, and historic oral traditions in our community Resource Room.
Community Programs & Educational Services
The Apache Language Preservation initiative provides essential cultural and educational services designed for youth, families, and fluent speakers:
- Community classes to learn spoken and written Apache
- Family outreach programs that promote bilingual immersion in homes
- Educational awareness campaigns across local reservation schools
- Mentorship and instructional resources for early childhood educators
- Collaborative elder storytelling circles and cultural archiving
- Comprehensive Apache language textbooks, flashcards, and digital learning tools
- Official Apache language instructor certification and teacher training
Get Involved & Become an Instructor
We are actively seeking fluent Apache speakers interested in becoming certified language teachers, as well as recruiting students ages 5 to 14 for immersive outdoor cultural learning and summer camps. Supported by our ongoing work in Apache Language Preservation, all language materials and research archives are made available to tribal members free of charge.
Join us in overcoming historical adversity by speaking, teaching, and passing down our native language to our youth and all generations to come. For more details or enrollment assistance, please contact our tribal office today.
