Government
The San Carlos Apache Tribe operates as a sovereign tribal government and a Federally recognized Indian Tribe organized pursuant to the provisions of Section 16 of the Indian Reorganization Act of June 18, 1934. Under this constitutional framework, our tribal government is committed to protecting tribal sovereignty, promoting community welfare, and fostering its own self-determination.
The San Carlos Tribal Government is Led by Elected Officials:
- Chairman
- Vice-Chairman
- Three representatives of Bylas District
- Two representatives of Gilson Wash District
- Two representatives of Peridot District
- Two representatives of Seven Mile District
The Chairman and Vice-Chairman are elected by all Tribal members and serve a four-year term. District council members are elected by their respective District Tribal Members and also serve a four-year term to represent community interests.
The Tribal Council is entrusted with the executive and legislative responsibility to safeguard the Reservation, manage tribal resources, and protect enrolled Tribal members. All official governing matters, community resolutions, and tribal laws go through various Boards, Committees, and the Tribal Council in coordination with the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
Elected district officials work closely with local residents to address community priorities, economic development, public health, education, and essential infrastructure projects across the reservation. Regular council meetings and official sessions are conducted to maintain transparent governance, accountable leadership, and public safety for the entire tribe.
