Peridot District is the largest of the four districts in the San Carlos Apache Reservation. It is located in Graham and Gila counties. Peridot District includes housing subdivisions and scattered residential homes. Several tribal department offices, schools, and healthcare facilities are located within the districts, along with the post office, travel center convenience store, Game and Fish, and police and fire station. Peridot District is located both north and south of US Highway 70 near the San Carlos River. Recreational activities included fishing at the San Carlos Lake, hiking the Peridot Mesa, softball fields, basketball courts, and community center.
History
The District’s name derives from the mineral, peridot, which can be found in the volcanic hills throughout the area. The Peridot District is also home to one of the Tribes most renowned natural fortresses, the Triplets, a couple of mountains with three peaks lined up overlooking the valley of Peridot.
Population
Peridot District has a population of approximately 5,489 residents who reside in Hallelujah Square, La Bamba City, New Moonbase, Old Moonbase, and Hollywod Ridge subdivisions. In addition the district includes scattered residential homes.
Enterprises
The District Enterprises include Apache Burger (Fast Food Restaurant and Travel center), Apache Security, Apache Cleaning Services, Equipment Rental (Heavy Machinery Rentals), Soda Canyon Complex (Trailer/RV park), and True Value Hardware Store.
Small businesses in the area consist of a small convenience store called Nolines, Randall Enterprises which offers portable toilets and commercial solid waste disposal, and Native Dynamics which handles residential and commercial solid waste disposal.
